"Hawaii & Beyond"
(Feb. 2008)
|
In January 2008 Pipeline
2 Paradise Radio achieved record breaking numbers for listenership. Not only
did P2P reach all 50 states in the USA, but recorded listening hours in 139 countries worldwide! How amazing is that! Here’s who
tuned in to Pipeline 2 Paradise Radio: Algeria American Samoa Andorra
Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Aruba Australia Austria Bahamas Bahrain Bangladesh Barbados Belgium Belize Bermuda Bolivia Bosnia
and Herzegovina Botswana Brazil Brunei Darussalam Bulgaria Cambodia Canada Cayman Islands Chile China, People's Republic of
Colombia Costa Rica Croatia/Hrvatska Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Estonia Fiji

Iceland India Indonesia Iran (Islamic Republic of) Ireland Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Korea, Republic
of Kuwait Latvia Lebanon Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Macedonia, Former Yugoslav Republic Malawi
Malaysia Maldives Malta Marshall Islands Martinique Mauritius Mexico Moldova, Republic of Monaco Mongolia Morocco Mozambique

Russia Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Saudi Arabia Seychelles Sierra Leone Singapore Slovak Republic Slovenia South Africa
Spain Sri Lanka Sudan Suriname Sweden Switzerland Taiwan Thailand Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Ukraine United Arab Emirates
United Kingdom United States Uruguay Venezuela Vietnam Virgin Islands (British) Virgin Islands (USA) Zambia.
The
success of P2P Radio has been incredible. What makes me even more excited is
all the music by artists on our playlist is getting major global exposure. The
true winners are the artists and finally after all the blood, sweat and tears put into their projects, their music is getting
the worldwide exposure and airplay it truly deserves. I guess you can say their
music is moving the masses not only in Hawaii, but beyond.
How
ironic and appropriate it is that as this news is shared our latest chosen “Paradise Pick” happens to be entitled
“Hawaii & Beyond.” This highly anticipated 2nd solo release of
Ryan Hiraoka is set to hit the streets on April 1st, 2008. Pipeline 2 Paradise Radio has been privileged to receive an advanced copy and also given the green light
on an exclusive release on this project. Currently P2P has 4 selections from “Hawaii & Beyond” gracing our
worldwide stage!
Continuing with his unique
sound and distinctive harmonies and in follow up to hits off of his debut album like “Big Island Ladies,” Live
Everyday,” and “Give Yo Aloha,” Ryan once again delivers a homerun with “Hawaii & Beyond.”
The ladies man himself
smoothly opens up his cd proclaiming bold statements dedicated to all the ladies.
“Every Girl" should be treated like a
princess, Every Girl deserves hugs and kisses, Every Girl should smile everyday, cause Every Girl deserves to feel this way!” Talk about winning over the female demographics right out of the blocks! This empowering song sets the positive tone for the rest of the project.
My favorite selection
off of “Hawaii & Beyond” occupies the 2 spot. “Living
Off The Aina” begins with strong harmonies painting the reality of many island people who face the day
to day struggles of living in Hawaii. It’s called
paying the “Price of Paradise” by many. It’s a humbling song
for this very “Price of Paradise” was the very reason I decided to move beyond Hawaii
and to Las Vegas. I’m
sure this reason holds truth for majority of the transplanted islanders worldwide.
Bursting
forward singing about another situation relatable to many island families is an anthem for single parents. “Single Mom” is
another song many can relate to and definitely one I can personally relate to. My
mom did whatever it took to raise 3 children on her own, including working 3 jobs simultaneously. She was the rock for our family and her loving and hard working qualities I’d like to believe has
transferred to myself and my ohana. R.I.P. mama.
Yet another song showing respects to the ladies.
Loyalty
and trust is said by many to be 2 of the most important factors required in any relationship.
This is why I gravitated to “Someone That Loves You”
as it talks about a girl playing with the hearts of 2 mans. To
all my braddahs out there, “what would you do?” What also inspired
me to add this selection into the broadcast was its Urban Island
appeal which I believe has strong possibilities to crossover into mainstream R&B. “I’m Sorry”
and “Just Friends” are also other
songs that carry this same vibe and potential.
Listen for the first 4
songs mentioned currently playing in our broadcast along with other past Ryan favorites.
As you bob your head to every one of these selections, don’t forget to listen to the message that’s embedded
within. Like myself, I’m sure at least 1 or 2 of these songs will be speaking
your story.
Congratulations Ryan on
what I deem a successful sophomore release. You can purchase “Hawaii &
Beyond” by clicking the album cover NOW! Mahalo!

"There's No Place Like Home"
|
It's almost certain that the first question I always get asked after someone finds out that I'm from Hawaii
is "why did you move and why would you choose this desert called Las Vegas over heaven on earth?" My answer: "The Price
of Paradise!"
I've heard many estimates of the number of Pacific Islanders transplanted and residing here in Las Vegas.
Whether it be 40,000+ or over 80,000+ I guarantee that the reason most islanders left Hawaii was to give themselves or their family a better start in life. To achieve the
American dream of owning their own home and several cars for a young family in Hawaii is
almost impossible with the high price of living. And so it remains, thousands of transplanted islanders continue
to make a good living in Las Vegas, myself and ohana
included.
It’s no wonder that Las Vegas is nicknamed "The 9th Hawaiian Island." Of course another question
I often get asked is "are you homesick?" Naturally I miss family and friends, but it’s almost certain that at least
1 family member or friend will visit Las Vegas every month.
What I really miss is swimming in the Pacific blue ocean being that my childhood days were filled with many memories of spending
long days at the beach. Call me bias, but Lake Mead just doesn't cut it for this Island boy when comparing it to
the beaches of Hawaii.
I've mentioned many times before the reason I created Pipeline 2 Paradise radio was to help with my homesick
factor. The music keeps me closer to the language, closer to the culture and closer to the people. This holds
true with many artists also who have moved away from Hawaii
and now call the mainland home.
While navigating the great networking site called Myspace I a came across a group out of what some call "The
10th Hawaiian Island" -Arizona. They call themselves
Mikioi. Lead by the voices of 2 young ladies originally from Hau'ula
and Kona, but now residing in Phoenix and Tempe, Lehua Dayondon
and U'ilani Yeepoong provides a fresh new sound in the Island music scene. It's
always been refreshing for me to hear female harmonies and what's more exciting is the same sentiments I hold about
being away from Hawaii is passionately expressed in their
music. In fact, their debut album confirms this as its simply entitled "Homesick."
"Homesick" packs a solid variety of Hawaiian Island
selections. On their Myspace profile Mikioi describes their musical sound as Jawaiian-style reggae, backyard kanikapila,
contemporary and traditional Hawaiian music, country, acapella, and whatevahs else we feel like tryin'!
The album kicks off with the first song Pipeline 2 Paradise radio added into rotation, "Mikioi
Music." Basically, it's their calling card song making sure no one forgets who they are. Backed
by a smooth island melody, I guarantee the lyrics M-I-K-I-O-I music will linger with you throughout the day. Definitely
their signature break out song.
The album goes on to reveal Mikioi's versatile style as they showcase their falsetto talents in one of Hawaii's
all time favorite traditional songs, Alekoki. So nahenahe and beautifully
presented, Mikioi's rendition of Alekoki definitely provides temporary relief to the homesick blues.
Another original song on the album that jumped out to me ironically while listening to the cd on a
recent visit back to Hawaii was "Hawaii, My Home." Mikioi's smooth harmonies and reggae rhythms
are complimented by an oli that is introduced at the opening and chanted in full at the close of the song.
Kumu Kaimikahu mesmerizes you with her haunting chant leaving you with visions of home.
For those who have supported Pipeline 2 Paradise radio over the past years you know I'm a big supporter of Island
Gospel music. A traditional Hawaiian hymn on "Homesick" is given new life by U'ilani and Lehua. Their heavenly voices
give praise to their higher power in their rendition of Kanaka Wai Wai.
A split arrangement between Hawaiian and English lyrics sung simultaneously provides a nice new touch to an old favorite.
Great job ladies!
I finally got to meet Lehua and U'ilani along with drummer Chanse YeePoong and bass guitarist Danny
Knapp at the Las Vegas Ho'olaule'a. One thing that truly stood out was the support that followed them from Arizona
and other states. Halau members, group dancers, ohana and friends all provided impressive support for Mikioi.
It was really something special to see and beautiful to witness. This type of support tells me that Mikioi will be around
for a long time.
I
had the opportunity to record Mikioi's performance in Las Vegas
and for your viewing pleasure I've done my best to showcase their Sunday Hololaule'a set. You can check that out below.
You can also view and hear more of Mikioi's music from their Saturday set at Alohavalley.com.
Congratulations
to the group Mikioi on a successful debut album release. You can reach Mikioi and pick up their cd by contacting
them through their Official Myspace profile.

When I first created Pipeline
2 Paradise Radio nearly 3 years ago one of my intentions was to create a playlist that I would enjoy listening to. It
consisted of mostly Contemporary Hawaiian and Urban Island
music. I told myself even if my family and close friends didn't listen at least I would enjoy the music selection. With
a few exceptions and for the most part till this day not many of my ohana members or close friends listen to my station.
You know what, I don't take it personally. In fact "not listening" is an ongoing joke with my family that
I throw into conversation every now and then. Here's the thing, although most of them don't really listen to my station,
they ALL still support me 100%. That's the thing with family... when the dust settles they will always be there
for you! At least that's the case with my ohana. It's the old saying, "blood is thicker than water!" For
me having family close is very important. I guess that's the reason my wife and I moved to Las Vegas... to be closer to both of our families.
Since moving to Las Vegas my family relationships have definitely strengthened and so
has my playlist for Pipeline 2 Paradise. As I have grown and solidified relationships within the Hawaiian and Pacific Island community up here in Las Vegas so has my musical taste. If you've been a constant listener of Pipeline 2
Paradise Radio over the years then you know that my playlist have changed a lot since launching. My musical taste has
evenly turned towards Traditional Hawaiian Music. I started appreciating the cultural experience that the music
provided. My playlist continues to celebrate more old Traditional artists and favorites as well as welcome new,
exciting and fresh artists and selections.
Speaking of new artists,
I received our current Paradise Pick's self entitled debut cd about a month ago. It was a stressful period for me and
incoming cd's, many of which I didn't recognize the names started to back up in the studios. Still I held to my original
promise made to myself that I will always take the time to listen to every track on every cd that came across my desk.
When I finally reached the cd of PIlioha which means "a family relationship," I listened to it and I was completely
blown away.
I listened to the entire
cd about 4 times throughout the day. It was truly a breath of fresh air that packed an old Hawaiian punch.
The cd opened up with
an oli or chant "Aloha E Nu'umealani" by Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole that truly sets the Traditional
vibe for the entire project. From track 1 I knew I was in for a treat.
Several songs immediately
captured me as I made my way through the cd, the first being Kahakuloa. Kamuela Kimokeo,
lead guitarist and vocals composed this song in gratitude to his first Kumu 'olelo Hawai'i
who took the class on a trip to Kahakuloa which I believe is a breathtaking landmark shoreline hill on the island of Maui.
Another composition that
showcases the original nahenahe sounds of Pilioha is written by the group's Bass player Glenn Mayeda Jr. As stated
in the cd cover, Pi'i Ka 'Ula utilizes kaona or "hidden meaning" to personify aspects
of nature that describe the first meeting of man and woman. Glen's inspiration and understanding also came through
similar personal experience.
Not to be left out, the
third member of Pilioha composes a heart-felt song in honor of his mom. Gary Kalehua Krug Jr.'s song musically rivals
one of the all-time greatest contemporary Hawaiian songs recorded by one of the most significant groups in Hawaiian music
history. "Everything," is the perfect compliment to Hui Ohana's "God Bless My Daddy/Mom I
Love You" Warning: Be careful as you listen to this song... your allergies could start to act up!
The rest of the album
clearly confirms why Pilioha is so well deserving of the 2006 Ka Himeni Ana contest honors. Beautifully performed Traditional
selections like "Aina Moloka'i," "Kaula'ili/Pu'uohulu," and "Keolaokalani (Penei
No)/Na Ka Makua establishes their foundation for their music. Of course as their name references, their journey
wouldn't be possible without the pillars of strenghts in their families. As Keone Nunes, who wrote their cd insert points
out about the front cd cover, "Pilioha is leaning on a stone of foundation or kahua, much like the foundations that each of
their families has built for them to lean on throughout their life.
Pilioha's debut album
is truly a must have for any Hawaiian music collection. It has instilled faith back to many Traditional Hawaiian Music
lovers whom feel that the roots of Hawaiian music were quickly being lost to newer styles. For me Pilioha's music has
provided another strong layer to my Traditional Hawaiian Music foundation.
Maybe now with Pilioha's
music in rotation my ohana will consider listening! Then again... oh well. Congratulations to the men of Pilioha
on a very successful debut release.

Over the past month I've received several e-mails and phone calls from friends back in Hawai'i telling
me I had to get my hands on this cd. Being a Hawai'i football fanatic and obviously an Island music supporter, the name
Afatia wasn't foreign to me. His hard knock efforts and strong work ethics both on and off the field captured many people's
admiration, including my own. Like many other islanders I embraced the works of Afatia when he smoothly harmonized with Hawaii's shakapella
studs - Reign. In fact the music of Reign, well... still reigns in the broadcast of Pipeline 2 Paradise radio.
Unfortunately, at least from what I saw, top local radio stations never really rallied around their movement and fully supported
their works. Again I say this cautiously because I could be wrong, but in my opinion Reign's release was well deserving
of high rotation airplay, which it didn't get.
So what exciting news it was for me to catch wind from a few braddahs back home that Afatia had just released
his solo debut album entitled "5:54." I quickly ordered his cd and popped it into my player.
Afatia immediately makes his stamp on the Island R&B scene with a soulful prelude that sets
the tone for the entire release. The "underground" sound is followed by the breakout hit called "All I Got" featuring Cross'd Out. This hit literally states that this cd drop
will indeed give you Afatia's best work to date.
As I continued through the cd, I more and more realized just how musically talented Afatia truly is.
What I truly admire is how Afatia incorporates his culture within the music. Polynesian instruments and language are
proudly, but not loudly interjected throughout joints like "All Night Long," "Lonely," and "Paradise" giving the project it's overall grounded vibe.
One song that spoke volumes to me was "So Many Things." Heart, passion, soul, and true emotions are poured into this selection. I guarantee everyone will connect with the lyrics
of this song at one level or another. In my opnion, this is the selection that elevates the entire project to a
new level in Island R&B. I really believe it has the legs to cross Pacific boundaries. It kinda has that
Boyz II Men "On Bended Knees" vibe.
Having a strong foundation in Faith, I instantly threw my hands up in praise while listening to the
"Worship Medley" featuring Reign. The simplicity of "I Love You Lord" and "I Worship You" makes it personally 2 of my
favorite praise and worship songs. Afatia passionately expresses thanks and praise and seals the
album with this uplifting medley.
I was told that the name of the album has deeper significance as it's a combination of Afatia's former football
number "5" and his late brother Eli's football number "54." With that in mind, I truly understand why giving "ALL" he's
got is not just empty words, but heart-felt promises to a loved one.
For so many reasons, it's truly the perfect time for Afatia and his music to rise from the underground!
Listen for "All I Got," So Many Things," and the "Worship Medley" in rotation on Pipeline 2 Paradise radio's worldwide broadcast!
This is a must have to complete any Island music collection as it serves up one of Polynesia's finest artist!

"The act, process, or an instance of redeeming"
|
They say the third time is always a charm. In Pati's case it's a homerun! Pati
comes out swinging with his latest release entitled "Redemption" and rightfully entitled!
Pati's highly anticipated junior release stormed the Hawaiian Island music airwaves
in early October and since then have topped numerous countdowns, including the "Eyes Of Paradise Top 7" countdown displayed
at Tower Records Las Vegas!
His versatile style continues to move the masses and captivate Island music lovers
worldwide. If you loved his first 2 releases, "Nesian" and "Think Of Me," then I guarantee you'll embrace "Redemption!" Residing in Las Vegas, I had the privilege to hear Pati's latest music
even before it hit the streets. Shawn Santana, President of Vizzun Entertainment "Las Vegas Premiere Entertainment Company," handed me a master copy to get a sneak peek of the release mid-September.
Being a huge fan of his music, I immediately vibed with every single selection. His music has truly matured and transparently
reflects many experiences in his life. Simply put by Pati himself, "Music to me is not only singing but sharing
your life through lyrics, with heartfelt meaning."
"I Wanna Love You Tonight" featuring RAWSUN was the first selection in my mind that started Pati's process of "Redemption!" It followed
in the footsteps of "Island Girls" and "Sweetest Sound." It's what I call vintage Pati music. His distinct
Island R&B vocals continue to radiate over smooth Reggae rhythms.
Pati goes on to sing with a sense of purpose as he belts out his rendition of Third
World's "World Of Uncertainty." This is another strong Island Reggae joint that's destined
to solidfy a spot as one of the albums smash hits!
Rooted in Faith and Family, Pati's inner soul shines through several selections. "My Father," "Love Of A Mother," and "UA Leai" all showcases his deep love for pillars of strengths in his life. This same expression of love is also confirmed in the
acknowledgements of his cd jacket.
Despite being hit by the hard knocks of life and challenged by many influences, Pati has
continued to strive for the best and kept his head high. I see this album as a glasshouse for Pati's
life in that it reveals every facet of what makes him complete.
One things for sure, Passion and Pure Aloha is evident in every selection. The act,
the process, and the instance of redeeming in my opnion has taken place! Congratulations Pati on another successful
project. I look forward to the "Grand Slam!"

Staying consistent with its past releases, the Island Love Shack 4 once again presents
that perfect mix of Island rhythms to satisfy Reggae music lovers at all levels. The Shack gives you a dose of
International Reggae artists like Shaggy Featuring Rayvon and their rendition of Olivia Newton
John's "Angel." Reminiscing of those who went before us and paved the way for artist of our
time is the group Beres Hammond and their Island hit "Rockaway." Hit after hit presents itself
as the Royal family of Reggae drops in on the shack with their selection entitled "She's Still Loving Me." Hawaii Island
artists such as Ekolu and Natural Vibrations have all revealed that their music has been influenced by the talents of Morgan Heritage.
Speaking of which, the shack is again reloaded with Hawaii's favorite Island artists,
many of them Na Hoku winners and nominees. Natural Vibration's "Hopin' And Prayin" prove
once again why they have been awarded many times the title of Hawaii's favorite Reggae band. The group iNoA'oLe
finds themselves on back to back compilations with their mega hit "Take This Raft" coming off their Hoku nominated debut
release, "Genres." Making their presence known in the shack and everywhere they go for that matter is the Island R&B/Reggae
duo "Big Every Time," or simply B.E.T.. "If It Ain't Love" keeps the shack shaking along with many
more top Hawaiian music hits. Malino, O-shen, Norm, One Groove, and Ekolu
all contribute to the success of this CD compilation.
Throw in new music from Demetrius Oliveira of the
group Ka'u with his rendition of Gregory Abbott's "Shake You Down." Also familiar talents
of Rodney Bejer, Eric Folk, and Kawika Regidor combine to bring you the debut release of The Kaimana Band
called "What Will It Be."
Island Love Shack 4 will definitely feed the hunger of Island music lovers everywhere
with its music. The trend of compiling hit after hit on one cd continues. Neosproductions.com truly has a grip
on what is popular and what type of songs the people want to hear.
Our recent FREE music Friday giveaway on Pipeline 2 Paradise radio confrims this statement
as nearly 200 listeners flooded our e-mail bin trying to win a complimentary copy of their own. The Shack is with out
a doubt back and like the previous 3 releases to drop, Island Love Shack 4 doesn't dissapoint.
Mahalo to Pati and the staff of Neosproductions.com for sending this awesome compilation
down the Pipeline!

Hands down "Island Roots" is simply the best Island music compilation series assembled to date.
Every new release justifies my humble opinion and the drop of Island Roots Vol. 6 doesn't dissapoint! Proven hits
that have heated up the Island music charts over the past years are featured on this "Burnin' Mix."
When seeing the list of tracks selected to this release the first word that came to mind descibing
the music was "Bonafide." The OG's - One Groove, who reigned the P2P charts for 2 months straight with their mega-hit
"Heartache" begins the trend of hot hits! They're followed by the band with no name, iNoA'oLe, who made
a big name for themselves in the industry with their breakout release "Take This Raft." The uso, Aziel brings his Island R&B flava to the mix describing a "Bright Sunny Day," quickly to become a Summer favorite. Another "sweet" jam on IR6 that the listeners of Pipeline 2
Paradise radio have embraced is "Sweetest Sound" from the Nesian man himself Pati featuring Aloha. Koauka, B.E.T., Ten Feet, and Malino amongst
others all add hits of their own into the mix.
Now here's what makes this "Burnin' Mix" extra HOT! Quiet Storm Records take it to
the next level with Island Roots Vol. 6 as they introduce not only 3 new releases (Nesian Style, Reggae Love, and Heaven), but throw in an ipod ready music video and a 9" x 14" centerfold pin-up
of Island Roots cover girl Jenn R. That my friends is definitely a complete multi-media package!
Make no mistake, Island Roots Vol. 6 delivers! I'm almost certain this compilation will
be playing loud and proud in thousands of cd players, radios and cars worldwide. I guarantee you though that the
six, the mix and the pix will be getting maximum exposure through the Pipeline!
Congratulation to Quiet Storm Records on another successful release in Island Roots Vol. 6 "Burnin' Mix."

(The following is taken from Quietstorm.com)
Following in the footsteps of the Praising Him Island Style series, the highly anticipated Praising Him Island Style, vol.
3 is finally here! Packed with more great hits from Hawaii’s finest contemporary and Christian recording artists, this
compilation is sure to be a hit.
To date, the “Praising Him” series
continues to uplift listeners with its positive message. From contemporary favorites Ekolu, Mana’o Company and Zacc
Kekona to the sounds of Pomai & Loeka, Reign, Wendell Warrington and the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau, Praising Him Island
Style, vol. 3 has something for everyone.
Complimenting the incredible audio tracks is
a full-color insert, album credits and original artwork.
In the spirit of Easter, this month's selection for Paradise Pick April 06' goes to "Praising
Him Island Style V3" coming out of Quiet Storm Records.
If you've been a supporter of Pipeline 2 Paradise radio then you know how great a passion
I hold for Island Gospel music. In fact, long before creating Pipeline 2 Paradise I told myself if I ever had the
opportunity to run my own radio station that I would give much deserved attention to this format of Island music.
It's very evident that many Island artists feel the same and are not ashamed of showing their true colors and sharing their
faith through their music. Artists like Ekolu, Mana'o Company, Na Leo, Fiji and much more always try to make it a point
to have at least one Island Gospel track on their releases.
The "Praising Him Island Style" series have truly made a positive difference in the lives
of many. Since it's release of Volume 1 back in 1997, which by the way was awarded a Na Hoku Hanohano for Best Religious
Album of the Year, through Volume 3, the series have not only been bringing people of faith together, but bringing people
back home to God.
My favorite Island Gospel song to date is featured on this cd compilation. "He Will Carry You" by the Mana'o Company has been a song of inspiration for me and my ohana. The words have carried
us through tough times in our lives and I'm sure it will uplift you through your low times also. My favorite
group Ekolu shares their God given talents and performs a very "touching" rendition of a classic gospel hymn called "He Touched Me." What I really like about their version is the beautiful instrumental intro. to the song which gives
you needed time to really focus in and prepare yourself for such a prayerful selection. I often use it for
morning reflection or sometimes just to collect my evening thoughts. Another selection that provides the same
outcome of a reflective atmosphere is "E Ku'u Morning Dew/Amazing Grace" performed by Arizona's Moon Kahele. Considered a Slack Key Master, Moon really glows in God's
name and his love for the Lord really comes forth through his music.
Other selections on "Praising Him Island Style V3" that I made a connection with was Reign's
"Pono" which features some great harmonies and might I add a great message. Starting off the cd with a
bold and "AMEN" statement is the blessed siblings of Pomai and Loeka with their song entitled "Jesus You Are The Answer." Lorna Lim also proclaims her aloha for her savior in her rendition of "I Love You Lord."
"Praising Him Island Style V3" is definitely a must have for any Island Gospel music lover.
Click on any highlighted songs above, listen to the heavenly hymns of these talented Island artists and after
you're moved by their angelic voices click on the cd below. It would serve as a great Easter Basket item or
just an uplifting gift for someone special in your life.
Congratulations again to all the artists and producers of "Praising Him Island Style V3"

Slacking" Their Way
To The Top
|
Years and years of slacking and finally the big prize! No, I'm not reminiscing on
my high school days and graduation. It is however the perfect statement to lead us into this month's feature CD.
(The following is taken directly from the inside jacket of the CD)
On October 14, 2003, a new era of slack key music began on Maui. On that Tuesday evening, Cyril Pahinui performed for an enthralled
audience at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. Hosted by George Kahumoku, Jr., the show featured not only music, but the story behind
slack key. George and Cyril played music together and talked story with the audience. Those who attended felt as if they had
been invited to a Hawaiian back yard. And not just any back yard, but that of some of the greatest slack key masters ever
to perform. Thus was born the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, the new home of slack key music in Hawai'i.
Pipeline 2 Paradise radio sends our aloha and congratulations to Daniel Ho Creations and
all the artists on the "Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Volume 1" CD compilation. This amazing collaboration featuring
some of Hawaii's greatest slack key artists captured the 48th Annual Grammy award in the category for Best Hawaiian Music
Album.
Now I have to be very honest when saying that prior to its Grammy nomination I never
took time out to sit down and review the entire CD, which is my usual routine when receiving any CD's. Although
I had it in my library I guess you can say I "slacked" off into getting around to listening to it. In fact, like
a handful of other colleagues in the industry I immediately thought "Slack Key = NoVocals." Being a casual karaoke enthusiast also
I have to admit I "Judged this CD by its cover."I'll go on the record right now and say that "I was wrong" in making an
assumption on this CD.
Instead of trying to explain the entire presentation of this CD I invite you to click
their names above to read up on their bios or click here to listen to sound clips of all the selections.
For me personally, the music of "Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Vol. 1" has opened
up an entire new window of appreciation for not only the art of slack key, but for Hawaiian music overall. As someone
in the industry who has the great privilege to present the music of Hawaii to the world on a daily basis, I'm humbled by
my "slack key" assumptions of the past. At the same time though I'm also hungry to now share more slack key
music with the listeners' world wide of Pipeline 2 Paradise radio.
Hawaiian music, in all its facets moves people. Whether it makes you move literally
like the last two month's Paradise Picks or moves you emotionally like this month's feature, whichever way you look at it
we are blessed to be exposed to it!
How ironic is it that a bunch of "slackers" have motivated me to get moving and make a
bigger difference within the Hawaiian music industry. My sincerest congratulations again go out to the producers and artists
of "Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Volume 1."

Island Soul
"A Way Of Life"
|
|
|
What first caught my eye and impressed me most about this cd compilation was its
packaging. From front to back, Island Soul displays an amazing art design throughout its jacket. As you can see
above the colors are stimulating and vibrant and the portrait of the model portraying Fire Goddess Pele on
the front cover is stunning. Akiona Studio's bring continuity to the cover with another breathtaking design
on the cd and back cover. A set of hands cupping the Hawaiian Islands really compliments the entire presentation and
makes you simply say "wow!" Hands down it's one of the best cd art I've ever seen.
Already feeling positive about this project, I placed the cd into my stereo system
and let the music play. Dubbed as "Your favorite hits with a touch of Aloha," I proceeded to listen, but with caution
thinking that "I hope the covers are given justice." I'm sure you know what I mean when a cover is done bad and all
you can say is "Why did they remake it?"
Well I'm happy to report that justice has been served!
The cd hits a homerun and gets you out of your seat and moving with its first selection ironically called "Action." The chemistry of B.U.B.'s ragga and Jonnie Torres's vocals combine to create "Sweet"
Island music which will surely make positive waves on Island music charts worldwide. In my opinion "Action" should be
one of the first break out hits of the cd.
One of my all-time favorite ballads has to be "Just Once" made popular by James
Ingram. It was also featured in one of my favorite movies "The Last American Virgin." No, it's not a porno for
those who haven't seen it. The movie does however showcase what I think is one of the best movie soundtracks featuring
the music of Journey and the Commodores to name a few. Since hearing Damon William's "Lately" I've always been a big
fan of his voice. Damon's cover of "Just Once" proves once again that Island artists has what it takes and can be successful on a national
level. His rendition is smooth, soulful, and filled with strong powerful notes that has become a trademark in his
ballads that fan's have come to love. Since winning Brown Bags to Stardom, I've always believed that Damon
Williams had the talent to go national. Selections like this still convinces me that he can breakthrough nationally
and I hope his desires are the same. Good luck brother.
The talents of Dani Girl Waring and Dennis Kahula, accompanied by Paul
Bunyuan's Saxophone help you "Set The Night To Music." This rendition is well in one word, "Soothing!" A nice slow rhythm and perfect harmonies
makes this song a great choice for those trying to find a good island song to set that "Oh yeah" atmosphere for
love.
I also enjoyed hearing Princess Ilona Irvine's cover on Janet
"Ms. Jackson" if you nasty's "Let's Wait Awhile." "Jammin'," is another well jammin' selection done by Jeremy "Pito" Javier. Like they say there's always room
for Bob Marley. "Soul And Inspiration" should be another big hit to come off of this cd compilation.
Island Soul holds promise as each song will definitely
evoke memories of growing up in the islands. It made me personally remember when I first heard the songs done by
its original artists and growing up in Hawaii. Island Soul is a great addition for any Island music lover's collection.
My compliments to Island Soul Entertainment and all who made this project a success. Get more details on this compilation as well as listen
to other clips of the songs here.

Celebrating 10 Years Of
"Ekolu Music"

Never before have I highly anticipated the release of a CD than with Ekolu's 4th CD project
entitled "Ekolu Music." I recall back in July when Pipeline 2 Paradise radio was celebrating our first year anniversary
streaming on the internet. I had the pleasure of doing an on-air interview with Lukela Keala, lead man and lead vocals
for Ekolu. He mentioned that they were currently working on a CD release to celebrate their 10th year anniversary together
and that it would tentatively drop sometime in December. As the months past and the anticipation grew, Lukela asked
me if I would provide a quote to help them promote their 4th release. "It would truly be an honor,"
I replied . I've said it many times before through the broadcast that Ekolu is my favorite band so the quote I
supplied above was easy to express because it was exactly how I felt.
December arrived and not only I, but listeners worlwide were asking about
their release. Finally, a sneak peek of "Ekolu Music" surfaced on their Myspace profile. Visitors to their profile were energized and excited to hear fresh music from Ekolu.
The big drop date was set for December 20th. The buzz traveled throughout the Hawaiian music industry. Finally,
"Ekolu Music was released!" I visited their official homepage and checked out their guestbook. Many listeners in Hawaii were praising "Ekolu Music"
and giving it rave reviews! Within the week listeners worldwide were dropping in with positive comments. One inspired
supporter simply said "The happiness your music brings is something words could never explain."
After receiving countless music requests on P2P from listeners in Japan, New Zealand, Canada,
Spain, Germany, Korea, Greece, China, Brazil and many states throughout the U.S. my urgency to get my hands on a copy escalated.
Being in Las Vegas I constantly called Tower Records everyday asking if "Ekolu Music" was in stock. They kept telling
me we have a few dozen on the way. I called everyday, but to my dissapointment it still didn't arrive. Well as
I write this review on January 8th it still hasn't arrived in Las Vegas. How grateful I am that Lukela took it upon
himslef to make sure a copy was express mailed my way. As soon as I got it the first thing I did was open up the
CD and read from front to back the inside of the CD jacket. I do this with every CD I receive because this really
brings perspective to every song recorded and makes it more impactful to hear knowing how the song was inspired.
You also get to read their "Mahalo or Thank you" messages that most artist insert within their cd cover. Inspired
by their "mana'o" or "thoughts" I placed their CD into my surround sound sysytem. Tip: When listening to a new CD always
play it on your best sysytem. You get the full effect of the song and also get a great sense of the vibe it creates.
The positive affirmations, the excitement and feedback, the hype of their 4th release was
all justified! "Ekolu Music" receives Paradise Picks first 5 Dolphin Rating!
The CD opens with their title cut "Ekolu Music" and immediately generates that unique sound that Ekolu fans worldwide have grown to love
over the past 10 years. This blazing selection definitely sets the vibe and bar for the entire CD.
Their sweet harmonies and island grooves continue to shine in "She's Music To Me." Accompanied by trumpets and saxophones, Lukela lets his heart passionately sing out
for one of the loves in his life, his wife Dar. This song again establishes Ekolu's identity and well...
becomes "Music to us!"
I strongly believe a song becomes successful when a listener can
relate his or her own experiences to it. I for one through several experiences can vibe with the song
"Mistah Offisah." Not only does it pack a contagious reggae rhythm, but also has an interesting story behind
it. Read the inspiration behind this song in the CD jacket and see if you can relate to the frustration Lukela
experienced. On a side note I personally have many close friends who serve and protect as a P.O., but unfortunately
as in all realms there's always a few rotten ones in the bunch that ruins it for everyone.
"I Love You Girl," the first song I heard through Ekolu's Myspace profile is a bonafide hit! It's what
I call vintage Ekolu music! The horn section really brings this song alive and enhances the track. Their harmonies
are crisp and the hook of the song to me is the chorus and title. For braddahs like me who sometimes struggle to
find the right words to express to our other half, this song could definitely help our cause. It's a smooth island
song that's not to "Lovey Dovey" if you wil and it cuts straight to the point! I guess it's a "macho"
way to express your heart without getting to mushy. Got that?? Good!
Now to the other side of the spectrum of love, another song that jumped
out to me was track #12. "Do you Really Mean Goodbye" is one of 3 covers that Ekolu presents on this release. I've always believed if you're
going to cover another artist' hit, "Please give it justice!" Ekolu has always followed this golden rule as this
nice and slow Manhattan's selection has been "Ekolunized!" - My new word to describe Ekolu's twist on songs. I predict
this to song to follow in the path of "I Love You Girl" and become an all time favorite for Ekolu fans!
For those who listen to Pipeline 2 Paradise radio religiously you know
that I'm a big supporter of Island Gospel music. Many artists devote one track on their CD to espressing
their faith and love for their God. Ekolu have done this on all 4 of their releases. "Closer To Jesus" is a relective and humbling song Lukela shares with fans who like myself aren't afraid to proclaim our
faith through our works. One thing I admire deeply about Ekolu is that all three lead members always give thanks and
praise to their Heavenly Father for their blessings. That's why I also made the statement below on Ekolu.

"Ekolu Music" is the perfect CD release to kick off this new feature on Pipeline 2 Paradise
Radio called "Paradise Picks." Another chapter is written and in it's first few weeks "Ekolu Music"
has climbed to the #5 spot on the World Billboard Music charts. As a Hawaiian music lover, a big fan of Ekolu's
works and founder of Pipeline 2 Paradise radio, I, Pu'ukani ask you to join me in helping to make "Ekolu Music"
#1 on the World Billboard charts!
Congratulations to Lukela, Akoni, Makapu, Waiehu Records, Ekolu Productions
and all who made "Ekolu Music" a treasure for those who purchased this release.
